Tukwila Village Plaza

Tukwila Village is located in the heart of the new downtown core of this growing community in south Puget Sound. The planning and design effort included numerous public community meetings to share the design process and obtain feedback for the development of the site plan, building design, public plaza, and community building. The six-building Master Plan includes four mixed multifamily and retail/commercial structures and a King County Library surrounding a central public plaza with a community commons building. The Plaza is the central outdoor space that provides a range of activities and outdoor functions. The Sullivan Community Center is a central feature of The Plaza, providing a range of indoor and outdoor activities, a stage area, seasonal Farmer’s Market, the Kona Kai Coffee Shop, various art installations designed by local artisans, a major water feature, and a variety of gathering and seating areas.

Tukwila Village Community Involvement

Tukwila Village is a large and important mixed-use community located in a very diverse part of Tukwila. This is a public-private venture between a private developer and the City of Tukwila.  A large public plaza is the centerpiece of this new community surrounded by a mix of retail, affordable senior, and market-rate housing. Due to the scale and potential impacts on this neighborhood, an extensive and multi-pronged public outreach process was implemented. Members of the Somalia, Korean, Bhutan, Latino, and Vietnamese community groups played a part in these meetings. The City brought language interpreters into the sessions to ensure that all involved could effectively participate. An added touch was to invite each of these cultures to provide samples of their food as refreshments to share with the whole group.
